NOW Festival 21st March 2019

NOW Dance Platform 2019

Hosted by the University of Chester Performing Arts Department, NOW Dance Platform is a celebration of Dance in Cheshire and the Creative Case for Diversity, which brings together dancers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds – both community dancers and professional artists – to perform and share their passion for the art form.

This event unites the community and celebrates a relentless commitment to dance and the widespread potential of talent in the region. It provides the opportunity for much needed debate and conversation about dance development and how to reach wider, inclusive audiences.

NOW Dance is delivered in partnership with Cheshire Dance and the University of Chester, and is supported by Cheshire West and Chester Council and Arts Council England.

Jamming Together: Appreciating Difference

NOW Dance 2019 will kick off with a FREE dance class and jamming session, which is open to all ages and abilities. This improvisation-based workshop for mixed ability dancers will lead participants through anatomical explorations of moving, both in and out of contact, toward a shared experience of jamming. Led by Malaika Sarco-Thomas and Richard Sarco-Thomas, this jam session will explore principles of contact improvisation and playful approaches towards meeting one another in imagination and movement.

Beginning at 11am and set to run until 12.30pm, this session is open to dancers and movers with all levels of experience. Due to limited space capacity, booking is required for this free event.

About Malaika Sarco-Thomas & Richard Sarco-Thomas

Malaika Sarco-Thomas is a dance artist researching the potential of improvisation to facilitate developments in environmental perception. She lectures in Dance at the University of Chester’s Department of Performing Arts and is currently editing a forthcoming book, Thinking Touch in Partnering and Contact Improvisation: Artistic, Scientific, and Philosophical Perspectives.

Richard Sarco-Thomas teaches Japanese martial arts and contact improvisation at festivals and movement research events throughout Europe. Drawing on contact improvisation, Jujitsu and the nonviolent principles of Aikido, his ongoing focus is on integrating body, mind, space, time, and environment/the other through a deeper understanding of the Japanese principles of Ma and Ma-ai within his lived experience of movement. Together since 2011, Richard and Malaika have co-organised Contact Festival Dartington, a platform for exchange in practices of contact and improvisation.
