After an early career in ballet, contemporary dance and New Dance, Fergus founded Green Candle Dance Company in 1987, working, for and with children, young people and older adults. Since then the company has worked extensively with older people living with and without dementia in hospitals, care homes, day centres and at its base in Bethnal Green, East London. Fergus directs an accredited training course for leading dance with older people and his company also runs specially designed short training courses for dancers and health workers. In 2009 he was awarded an OBE for services to dance. In 2011 he received an honorary Doctorate of Arts from De Montfort University, Leicester.
In 2017 and 2019 Cheshire Dance commissioned Fergus to deliver on our continued professional development programme for dance artists. These weekend workshops were designed for people working or intending to work with older people, such as dance artists, health and social care professionals and others, to introduce skills and approaches needed to lead dance sessions with older people, with a particular focus on people living with dementia.
At Cheshire Dance, we provide opportunities for older adults to live in the moment and to engage physically, socially and emotionally through movement and dance in community sessions across Cheshire West and Cheshire East.
Green Candle is one of the UK’s leading dance companies known for the high quality and originality of its work involving both young and older people with and without disabilities.
